There are certain areas of the United States that are moving forward with green solutions. New homes are being constructed, concentrating on green construction, necessities and amenities. Energy efficient appliances, green roofs, solar heating, and using materials from renewable forests are all elements the direction our country is going in.
But there is another area which can greatly impact our planet. That is the outdoor environment, or the landscape.
There are numerous ways that outdoor elements can be addressed.
One way is to use native plants. Native plants require less maintenance than other types of plants. They need less water. They are more resistant to pests and disease, and therefore don't require pesticides. Little or no fertilizing is necessary. They keep out undesirable invasive species, which can take over a landscape.
Many natives are quite beautiful. The Flowering Dogwood tree has beautiful pink or white flowers. It also has wonderful berries in the Fall, which birds love. Viburnums will take the shade, flowers and also produce berries. Winterberry Holly becomes absolutely covered with berries in the winter too. Red Twig Dogwood has bright red stems which are showy against evergreens during the winter months. White Pine is a native evergreen which is majestic in later years. There are many, many others. These mentioned are just a few that come to mind.
Another landscaping idea that is helpful to the environment is to create rain gardens. Although native plants are often used in these types of areas, non-native plants that are wet site tolerant can be included. Rain gardens are areas that are especially created so that water is directed to them. They are located in a low lying area. Wet site tolerant plants are used and do well here. Rain gardens help with storm water management. Water draining to this area goes back into the ground and helps supply the water sources. Rain gardens eliminate runoff and also the need for expensive piping of excess water elsewhere.
Xeriscaping is another green method of landscaping. Here, plants that are drought tolerant are used in the landscape. As with native plants, less water is needed for survival. Many native plants are drought tolerant although some non-native ones can be also. Many herbs and perennials are part of this group that can easily survive in dry conditions. Less water is used from our homes to keep drought tolerant plants alive. Lavender, Catmint, Thyme, Japanese Holly, and Junipers are all examples of these types of plants.
Lighting designs and fixtures that use less energy is also a positive way to help out environment. Low voltage lighting is one choice. An even better one is solar lighting. Solar lights depend on the energy of the sun during the day to provide lighting at night. Eight hours of sunlight is required to get the full benefits. No electricity is used and installations are simple.
I have touched on just a few ways to help the environment with some good landscaping ideas. Hopefully you might use some or all of them in your landscaping projects. Every little bit helps.

Many people may be familiar with the concept of landscaping, yet they may not have an actual definition or conceptualization for landscaping. There are day to day activities as well as elaborate plans that may take minutes or years to finalize. Whether people are intellectually aware of what these changes are comprised of or not, many people are to some extent very aware of landscaping. Essentially, landscaping is a process that refers to any type of modification done to an area of land. As such, landscaping refers to a number of different activities, but there are some fields that individuals are more familiar with than others. Hobbies and occupations can allow an individual to work in the area of landscaping.
For example, many people enjoy gardening, which is in and of itself a type of landscaping. Planting new flowers, trees, shrubs or bushes, creating an area specifically for flora, this is a hobby but it can transcend such a label to become nothing short of true art. The living elements are utilized in order to create an aesthetically appealing environment on the area of land. Natural elements can also be used to shape the land. Some of these elements include water bodies, the shaping of the terrain or the elevation of land. By manipulating these features and attributes, the layout and appearance of a tract of land can differ substantially.
Occupations are also forged in the areas of landscaping. Some people are able to make their living by taking part in these activities. Included in these occupations are golf course superintendents, baseball park, football stadium and other sporting arena planners and yard maintenance individuals. Sometimes these tasks are necessary and other times they are simply done to maintain an area so that it keeps the particular look desired. In other cases, individuals may purposely want to completely remodel an area of land, so that the landscaping practices need to be used in order to change the environment.
Still, landscaping is not just done for beauty and looks. There are often many landscaping practices that are utilized because of the necessity that surrounds these actions. When community planners sit down to design a town, village, city area, park or other community land tracts, they are designing the landscape of the area. In these instances, this often includes fences, buildings, sidewalks, paths, sculptures and parking lots, but can also go on to include bridges, roadways and other accessories of transportation and modern living.
Individuals can work on landscaping projects either from the start of an areas conception or over time in order to update or re-vive an area. This is interesting because by changing specific aspects of an area, the tone of the area can be completely altered. Whether a person needs to or wants to create or recreate an area of land, they can do so using different practices, including common gardening hobby trends or mechanical instruments used for deep and extensive changes, all of which are referred to as landscaping tactics.

A home backyard is a special place. It is close to your heart. It is a private place. Unlike a front yard of the house a backyard is free of any artificial and injected rules of design. What I mean is it's ok to do mistakes in a backyard. It's your own playground.
You can experiment a lot in this place. If you are a do-it-yourself kind of person then you must have tried growing a few plants in this place and may be failed a few times. But that's what it makes a backyard so special.
The main function of a backyard is to "relax". So while designing a garden in this areas never compromise on your emotions. Try various alternatives of design, layout, flowerbeds, shrubs, etc. while designing a garden. Always remember that a garden does not always means planting a few plants by boundary and laying out expensive lawn.
There is much more to landscaping than just planting plants. So while designing garden look inside yourself as a person before. the bottom
line to success of any space whether interior or exterior is "comfort" of you and your family members.
Why do homes have a backyard? According to my perception it is just provision for you and the family to enjoy the together moments when
you don't want to move in the outskirts of the city by traveling a distance. It is a miniature model of the countryside woods you would otherwise visit, when you are on vacation.
So plan accordingly by keeping this in mind. If the backyard is a small space you will have to give a lot of attention to detailing while the
execution of the garden. Detailing such as planned spaces, pathways,exterior lighting.
One good idea is to create an island of flowerbeds to attract butterflies, so that it remains a focal attraction and your guests and friends will never forget it. In case of a large backyard small private spaces can be arranged that can be used to create a campfire or a place surrounded by shrubs overlooking the outside surroundings. Such private spaces can be used to do paintings or a place for the kids to play hide and seek. Pathways with width of approx. 3 to 5 feet can be used for circulation and your kids can also use them as bicycle tracks.
These pathways can be easily enhanced using artificial external lighting during night time. A small fishpond with a fountain can create some good and cool atmosphere.

you a few starting points that you can go ahead and expand using your own imagination. Just remember what I said earlier always keep YOU

As a rule, we choose to grow bush beans rather than pole beans. I cannot make up my mind whether or not this is from sheer laziness. In a city backyard the tall varieties might perhaps be a problem since it would be difficult to get poles. But these running beans can be trained along old fences and with little urging will run up the stalks of the tallest sunflowers. So that settles the pole question. There is an ornamental side to the bean question. Suppose you plant these tall beans at the extreme rear end of each vegetable row. Make arches with supple tree limbs, binding them over to form the arch. Train the beans over these. When one stands facing the garden, what a beautiful terminus these bean arches make.
Beans like rich, warm, sandy soil. In order to assist the soil be sure to dig deeply, and work it over thoroughly for bean culture. It never does to plant beans before the world has warmed up from its spring chills. There is another advantage in early digging of soil. It brings to the surface eggs and larvae of insects. The birds eager for food will even follow the plough to pick from the soil these choice morsels. A little lime worked in with the soil is helpful in the cultivation of beans.

If seed is planted every ten days or two weeks all summer, you can have tender lettuce all the season. When lettuce gets old it becomes bitter and tough.
Melons are most interesting to experiment with. We suppose that melons originally came from Asia, and parts of Africa. Melons are a summer fruit. Over in England we find the muskmelons often grown under glass in hothouses. The vines are trained upward rather than allowed to lie prone. As the melons grow large in the hot, dry atmosphere, just the sort which is right for their growth, they become too heavy for the vine to hold up. So they are held by little bags of netting, just like a tennis net in size of mesh. The bags are supported on nails or pegs.
It is a very pretty sight I can assure you. Over here usually we raise our melons outdoors. They are planted in hills. Eight seeds are placed two inches apart and an inch deep. The hills should have a four foot sweep on all sides; the watermelon hills ought to have an allowance of eight to ten feet. Make the soil for these hills very rich. As the little plants get sizeable say about four inches in height reduce the number of plants to two in a hill.
Always in such work choose the very sturdiest plants to keep. Cut the others down close to or a little below the surface of the ground. Pulling up plants is a shocking way to get rid of them. But as the winder winds have started to roll in, you find yourself putting away your gloves and your tools. Before you say goodbye to gardening for the winter months, however, there is a world of winter gardening that you should consider! You may be surprised at how many plants flourish during the wintertime. You may find that winter gardening is the hobby for you. While it is true many annuals and different plants can't stand the harsh weather that winter brings, there are many hardy plants and flowers that can make it through a hot summer and cooler winter. By planting accordingly, something will always be in bloom. And let's not forget there are certain vegetables, which can be grown in the summer, as well as, the winter.
By carefully placing some trees, shrubs, garden ornaments and stoned pathways with borders, through your yard, you will have created a place which will spark color and design for both summer and winter. Choose deciduous trees and shrubs for interest all year. They not only have beautiful flowers in summer and lovely foliage, but they also provide interesting bark designs, as well as, striking stem colors, fragrances and tall branches year round. These are all interesting backdrops for the winter snow or the summer's greenery. Evergreens are always a good choice, as their greens stay constant year round. Another option is the red twig dogwood. These display beautiful white flowers in summer and have stunning red twigs all year.
Ground cover is another option for summer/winter gardening. There are many ornamental ground covers available to choose from. The Ajuga, a hardy perennial and bugleweed, displays blue flowers in early summer amidst its beautiful purple/green foliage, which will last through the winter. English ivy is another popular ground covering which grows well anywhere and anytime. You may even choose to go with scented plants. The Daphne shrub has a potent perfume aroma you will enjoy through all seasons. It will produce either pink or white flowers in early winter and sometime yellow berries in hot, dry summers. The winter honeysuckle also provides a pleasing scent and flowers cream-colored blossoms against its beautiful greenery, in late winter. Rhododendrons are wonderful bushes and some varieties bloom year round. There are even certain types of hardy hibiscus, which have been known to blossom each season.
You can also include certain vegetables, which can grow in warm and cold weather. Among them are broccoli, cabbage, lettuce, peas and summer/winter squash. They will need little or no protection and will thrive in well-drained soils. Winter doesn't have to be the end of your gardening display. By choosing a mix of trees, shrubs, plants and vegetables, you will have color and warmness in your yard all year. These will provide an inviting scene, which will make you want to come outside to enjoy in all types of weather.

Where would you make a garden in your back yard or your front yard. You wouldn't have any problem if you have huge back yard or front yard. But for those without a choice, it means simply doing the best one can with these conditions. With space limited it resolves itself into no garden, or a box garden. Surely a box garden is better than nothing at all. A box garden will be just nice for a small back yard. A good box garden size for a small back yard will be 3m x 3m. You can create any size you like depending on your back yard size.
But we will now suppose that it is possible to really choose just the right site for the garden. What shall be chosen ? The greatest determining factor is the sun. No one would have a north corner, unless it were absolutely forced upon him; because, while north corners do for ferns, certain wild flowers, and begonias, they are of little use as spots for a general garden.
If possible, choose the ideal spot a southern exposure. Here the sun lies warm all day long. When the garden is thus located the rows of vegetables and flowers should run north and south. Thus placed, the plants receive the sun's rays all the morning on the eastern side, and all the afternoon on the western side. One ought not to have any lopsided plants with such an arrangement.
Suppose the garden faces southeast. In this case the western sun is out of the problem. In order to get the best distribution of sunlight run the rows northwest and southeast.
The idea is to get the most sunlight as evenly distributed as possible for the longest period of time. From the lopsided growth of window plants it is easy enough to see the effect on plants of poorly distributed light. So if you use a little diagram remembering that you wish the sun to shine part of the day on one side of the plants and part on the other, you can juggle out any situation. The southern exposure gives the ideal case because the sun gives half time nearly to each side. A northern exposure may mean an almost entire cut-off from sunlight; while northeastern and southwestern places always get uneven distribution of sun's rays, no matter how carefully this is planned.
The garden, if possible, should be planned out on paper. The plan is a great help when the real planting time comes. It saves time and unnecessary buying of seed. Planning makes your life easier later.
New garden spots are likely to be found in two conditions: they are covered either with turf or with rubbish. In large garden areas the ground is ploughed and the sod turned under; but in small gardens remove the sod. How to take off the sod in the best manner is the next question. Stake and line off the garden spot. The line gives an accurate and straight course to follow. Cut the edges with the spade all along the line. If the area is a small one, say four feet by eighteen or twenty, this is an easy matter. Such a narrow strip may be marked off like a checkerboard, the sod cut through with the spade, and easily removed. This could be done in two long strips cut lengthwise of the strip. When the turf is cut through, roll it right up like a roll of carpet.
But suppose the garden plot is large. Then divide this up into strips a foot wide and take off the sod as before. What shall be done with the sod? Do not throw it away for it is full of richness, although not quite in available form. So pack the sod grass side down one square on another. Leave it to rot and to weather. When rotted it makes a fine fertilizer. Such a pile of rotting vegetable matter is called a compost pile. All through the summer add any old green vegetable matter to this. In the fall put the autumn leaves on. A fine lot of goodness is being fixed for another season.
Even when the garden is large enough to plough, I would pick out the largest pieces of sod rather than have them turned under. Go over the ploughed space, pick out the pieces of sod, shake them well and pack them up in a compost heap.
Mere spading of the ground is not sufficient. The soil is still left in lumps. Always as one spades one should break up the big lumps. But even so the ground is in no shape for planting. Ground must be very fine indeed to plant in, because seeds can get very close indeed to fine particles of soil. But the large lumps leave large spaces which no tiny root hair can penetrate. A seed is left stranded in a perfect waste when planted in chunks of soil. A baby surrounded with great pieces of beefsteak would starve. A seed among large lumps of soil is in a similar situation. The spade never can do this work of pulverizing soil. But the rake can. That's the value of the rake. It is a great lump breaker, but will not do for large lumps. If the soil still has large lumps in it take the hoe.
Many people handle the hoe awkwardly. The chief work of this implement is to rid the soil of weeds and stir up the top surface. It is used in summer to form that mulch of dust so valuable in retaining moisture in the soil. I often see people as if they were going to chop into atoms everything around. Hoeing should never be such vigorous exercise as that. Spading is vigorous, hard work, but not hoeing and raking.
After lumps are broken use the rake to make the bed fine and smooth. Now the great piece of work is done.
